Newsletter and Event Announcement

Volume I, Number 2 - May, 2000

Message from the President

From the Palm Springs Air Museum and Pond Classic Car Collection, Palm Springs, California

Another fantastic turnout! I would like to thank everyone who attended this event and a special thanks to those of you that drove Imperials. I would also like to thank the Air Museum, its staff and Mr. Robert Pond for a wonderful day of classics from the highways in the sky to the roads of class and power below.

For those of you who are counting, I noticed (10) Imperials in the circle in front of the Air Museum, one in the parking lot and perhaps there was a picture taken of the '57 Ghia, if I remember correctly. That's two events and two special cars.

By the way, this club is back on track and running full steam ahead. Your officers are stronger than ever and YOU, the members, are stronger than ever. The next twelve months should bring more fun and adventure. The legwork has begun for OUR State Meet next year, 2001.

Also, in case you did not notice - there were three former SCIO presidents at Palm Springs. I don't think I have to mention two of their names, since they both start with an H! Thanks for your support! Please remember, this is YOUR club and YOU can make it happen.

Your President,
David Doty          sciopresident@juno.com

SCIO Event - June 25, 2000 - Vista

The SCIO has scheduled Sunday, June 25, 2000 for our next gathering at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum, 2040 N. Santa Fe Ave., Vista, CA (Phone: 760-941-1791). Full details are on page 3 of this Newsletter!

Statewide Meet - Modesto, May 6, 2000

The 2000 Imperial Owners Statewide meet in Modesto, CA on May 5 - 7 was the best in many years.

More than 50 Imperials - and their owners - were shown on "I" Street in front of the main Modesto Library. Results of the car show are on page 4 & 5.

Our host club, the Imperial Owners Association of Sacramento Valley (IOASV) did a fantastic job of preparation and execution.

The weekend events included Friday's Imperial caravan to the Hershey Chocolate Factory in Oakdale and an evening poolside party. After the show - and in the rain - we trekked to the Awards Banquet at St. Stan's Brewery. The Sunday morning park brunch just missed more rain and then many, mighty Imperials caravanned to the Hilmar Cheese Factory. Hershey and Hilmar produce nearly a million pounds of chocolate and cheese daily! (Each!)

We'll have a full report in the next newsletter, but visit Dietmar Frensemeyer's web site for pictures:

SCIO Event - March 25, 2000 - Palm Springs Air Museum & Pond Car Collection

The Southern California Imperial Owners, Inc. Air Museum gathering on March 25, 2000, included a meeting and tour to Mr. Robert Pond's car collection. It was absolutely great! We had 10 Imperials in the Museum driveway at 11 a.m. and nearly 40 club members and guests took the Museum tour.

Those attending included Bob Baker, Bill Baumruck, John Brauninger, Nannette & Charlie Clark-Cook, David & Billie Doty, Doug Gilfillan, Dick & Marlys Hamann, Paul Heinzman, Roger Irland, Sherwood Kahlenberg, Jack Edward Knecht, Denis & Martha Lardner, John & Christie Lazenby, John Lloyd, Joe Machado, Charles Rufus McDonald, Norman Phair, Jim & Donna Pierce, Barry Poynter, Dawn Saunders, Bob Schmitt, Jay Weinert, Greg Wright, Brian Holker, Charlotte Barge, Dave & Maria Kahn, Dave Podnar, Edward C. Konth, George Tucker, J. Kosich, Jeff Puklavetz, Keith Keller, Lynn Morrow Jr., M. Andrew Duvale, Michael O., Richard Berman, Wayne McH., and Ken Cassady.

After expert docent guided tours of the aircraft and displays, we had a picnic lunch in the hangar "food court" and a business meeting.

The business meeting approved the newly-revised Bylaws (attached to the last newsletter). President Dave Doty also mentioned a site selection by the club officers for the location of the Imperial Owners' Statewide Meet in 2001, which will be hosted by the SCIO. Our choice of Solvang met with a favorable buzz - more on this below!

After lunch, we caravanned through the back end of Palm Springs to visit the large private car collection of Mr. Robert Pond at his "Pond de Rose" estate. We had a private viewing of one of the most important automobile collections in the country - consisting or nearly 125 classic, collectible, and special interest automobiles. It was a great group of cars on a beautiful estate and many of us had the chance to chat with Mr. Pond at the end of the tour. Thanks to Jay Weinert for recommending and planning this event!

Newsletter, Club Membership and Bylaws

This is the second newsletter published under the new Club Bylaws. As noted in the last issue, all 186 "Imperial fans" now on the roster will receive this newsletter, but it may be your last "freebie"! Future newsletters will be longer - we're holding the size down to save postage on this free issue, but we'll expand for our paid members. And include photos!

Our new Bylaws require you to pay SCIO $20 annual dues to become a Club member and receive future newsletters. Check your mailing label - if "2000" appears to the right of your name, you are fully paid. If any other year appears, send in your dues! We now have 50 paid members:

Statewide Meet - Solvang, May 4-6, 2001 - Volunteers Needed!

We've started the ball rolling for the 2001 Statewide Meet, which WE are hosting in Solvang. But there's MUCH to do, so now is the time to help with ideas and groundwork, especially to find sponsors and plan the Meet events and tours. Please give Dave Doty a call if you can help!

Volunteers are also needed for our Events Committee. We need help - and suggestions - to plan future events. We also need writers and editors for this Newsletter and The Imperial Eagle - it will return!

WANT ADS

Wanted - For a 1939 Custom Imperial Limousine C24

This is my Perpetual Plea for Parts! The parts needed are Chrysler:

P/N 692186 Mainshaft with Fluid drive and Overdrive
P/N 633804 Transmission countershaft (Cluster) gear
P/N 694793 Main Drive Pinion (Input Shaft)

I'll worry about what other parts I need as I go along. Also I would like a B/W book/catalog with the B/W T85A-1A transmission P/N's and schematics or copies to help in my search for parts.

The transmission was used in 38/39 eight cylinder cars only, although the overdrive units are different. Jim & Cathy Martin, jcmartin@webtv.net, 1058 Westchester Drive, Sunnyvale, CA 94087-2047
